New Management and a New Direction for Backpackers Hostels Canada

Posted on October 19, 2026  •  3 minutes  • 567 words

Backpackers Hostels Canada has been connecting travellers with independent Canadian hostels for well over a decade. Today we’re sharing some news: the site is under new management, and we’re resetting how it works for travellers and for the people who run hostels, campgrounds and budget stays across the country.

What’s changing for travellers

A faster, simpler site. We’ve rebuilt Backpackers Hostels Canada from the ground up. Pages load quickly on any connection, including the spotty hostel Wi-Fi you’re probably reading this on. There are no accounts to create and no pop-ups. Just browse hostels by province and read our travel guides.

Less clutter, more travel. We’ve retired years of sponsored articles that had nothing to do with backpacking Canada. What’s left is focused on hostels, routes and practical travel advice, and that’s where new content will stay.

No more user accounts. The old sign-up, favourites and review features saw very little use, so they’re gone. Every listing is now a clean page with the details you need: location, contact information, website and directions.

What’s changing for hostel and campground owners

One-time fee listings

No subscriptions and no monthly bills. You pay a single one-time fee of $300 CAD to list your hostel, campground, campus summer residence or independent guesthouse, and your listing stays up. Updates to your hours, rates, photos or contact details are included. Just send them to us.

To list, we need at least two photos of your property, your address and phone number, and a description of the property and its location. We verify every listing by hand before it goes live, so travellers can trust that what they see here is real and current.

Digital guidebooks for your region (coming soon)

Your guests always ask the same questions: where to eat, which trail to hike, how to get to the next town. Coming soon, hosts will be able to pay to offer a digital guidebook for their region, written for backpackers and featured alongside your listing. It’s a useful extra for your guests and a reason for travellers planning a route to stop at your place.

Listings that AI gets right

More and more travellers plan trips by asking AI assistants: “Where’s a good hostel near the Cabot Trail?” or “Is there a hostel in Dawson City with a kitchen?” Those answers are only as good as the information the AI can find, and small properties are often described with outdated prices, wrong addresses or details from a hostel that closed years ago.

We’re building Backpackers Hostels Canada to be a reliable source those tools can read:

Get listed

If you run an independent hostel, campground or budget stay in Canada, we’d love to have you. See List your hostel or property for how it works.

Thanks to everyone who has travelled with us, stayed at our member hostels and kept independent hostelling alive in Canada. Happy trails!
